91黑料鈥檚 (PCC) Student Government Association (SGA) and SGA advisor received awards at the North Carolina Comprehensive Community College Student Government Association (N4CSGA) spring conference held on April 6.
PCC鈥檚 SGA was awarded the Top 鈥淐鈥 Award, also known as the college of the year award, for their involvement and interaction on campus as well as in the community. The SGA has shown their dedication to community engagement by recently partnering with the Person County Recreation, Arts and Parks Department to offer intramural sports for PCC students, employees and alumni. The SGA also regularly hosts various events on campus such as 鈥淏lack Joy鈥 for Black History Month and 鈥淕alentines鈥 for Women鈥檚 History Month where they invited women community leaders and business owners to attend.
Community college SGAs had to submit flyers from their events, evidence of how they have worked with the community, evidence of marketing efforts and participate in interviews where they were asked various questions related to their submissions to be eligible for the award. PCC鈥檚 SGA competed against larger community colleges for the award such as Rowan-Cabarrus, Surry, Forsyth Tech, Randolph and Cleveland.
Tiffany Skouby, PCC Director of Student Engagement/SGA Advisor, was awarded the Central Division Advisor of the Year award for her leadership dedication to PCC鈥檚 SGA and the N4CSGA. Skouby has encouraged the SGA鈥檚 involvement in not only campus and community events, but also on the state level by participating in the N4CSGA, mock legislative sessions and advocating for community colleges on the state level.
Tommy Williams, PCC鈥檚 SGA president, expressed that 鈥渃ommunity is part of the college; it鈥檚 written in our name.鈥
Jahlia Winstead, PCC鈥檚 SGA secretary, explained that the goal with SGA events is to always have community involvement. Winstead and Hayley Ale, PCC鈥檚 SGA Publicity Officer, are part of the planning committee for SGA events.
鈥淚t鈥檚 been important to us this year to connect our community with our college,鈥 Winstead said.
鈥淚t all goes back to community,鈥 Skouby said. 鈥淲e get to talk to different people; we get to learn from each other, and it makes us better and the campus community better.鈥
Skouby expressed that she and the SGA were both shocked and thrilled to receive the Top 鈥淐鈥 Award.
鈥淥ne of the things that I really love about our SGA is the fact that we鈥檙e built from different backgrounds, we鈥檙e different ages, but we鈥檙e all learning from each other and growing from each other,鈥 Skouby said. 鈥淚t has really helped us cater to the diverse community that is Person County and Caswell County.鈥
